33| Pim de Pauw

Pim de Pauw liep trots in ’t rond,
keek meer omhoog dan naar de grond.
‘Kijk’, zei hij tegen iedereen,
‘zo mooi als ik is er niet één;
zo mooi als ik is er niet één.
Heeft iemand ooit zulke veren gezien?
‘t Is er niet één, maar het zijn er wel tien!
Alles van het prachtigste blauw.
Niemand zo mooi als Pim de Pauw.’

‘Oef’, zei Nelis Nachtegaal,
‘naast jou voel ik mij wel wat kaal.
Maar wat voor moois kun jij nog meer
dan enkel pronken, sjieke heer;
dan enkel pronken, sjieke heer?
Luister eens goed naar m’n vrolijke lied.
Ik hoop toch zo, dat je daarvan geniet.
Op zijn plaats, op eigen terrein,
waardevol kan eenieder zijn.’

Pim de Pauw stond werk’lijk paf,
dat zingen was gewoonweg af,
luisterde stil naar ’t mooi gefluit
tot aan het allerlaatst geluid;
tot aan het allerlaatst geluid.
In diep gepeins liep hij toen in het rond,
in ’t blauwe pak, dat hem schitterend stond.
Ja, dacht hij, ’t is werkelijk waar:
’t mooiste is toch pas met elkaar.

Pim the Peacock
Pim the Peacock strutted proud
and liked to say his name out loud.
He called to all that he could see:
“No one looks quite as good as me,
no one looks quite as good as me.
Would you just look how my feathers all shine,
and not just one, but at least ninety-nine!
All in the most wonderful blue,
no one as great as me, it’s true.”

“Well,” said Ned the Nightingale,
“compared to you I’m somewhat pale,
but what else can you do, dear friend,
than brag and show off without end,
than brag and show off without end?
Why don’t you listen awhile to my song,
a happy feeling just might come along.
Talents are unique to each one,
but when we share them it’s more fun.”

Pim the Peacock was amazed;
the lovely song had him quite dazed.
Still and in awe he listened on
until the slightest sound was gone,
until the slightest sound was gone.
Deeply in thought he then paced in the round,
trailing his beautiful tail on the ground.
“Yes,” he said, “it really is true:
one add on one is joy for two.”
